Yesterday I bought clothes

I walked outside in a dress for the first time ever. Had a great time with someone special and am actually feeling like myself.

I love this Trans Girl Diaries comic.

I see this SO much in the queer community - not only the trans community.  And I'm pretty sure there's a fair share of it in the feminist community, as well.

I've never seen "Ticked Off Trannies With Knives," and I'm not advocating it, per se.  Nor am I shitting all over it.  I can understand why people have problems with it.  The point about the community is what I'm reblogging this for.

It's hard to be a "fair" and "empowering" member of any community when things are like this.  It's very difficult to move among groups of people where half of the community will rip you apart no matter what you do, and the other half will embrace your effort.  It's hard to be a community member, and an ally.

I think that this aspect of human nature is really screwing over the queer cause as a whole, as I'm sure it screws over countless others.  Sometimes I think the worst thing about a community is the fact that it has to involve other people.  :/

OH MY GOD, THIS!!!  I hate it when I feel like instead of being a supportive community, we've all become a bunch of easily-offended fuckheads who only exist to tell each other what to hate and how to hate it.

Pretty much sums up my opinion of a depressingly large portion of the online trans community.

this is p. much exactly why i have been staying out of trans* politicking as of late. it's gotten utterly absurd. you can't please 'em all, and i am not a fan of drama, so i'll just bow out until something really pisses me off.

Uh, movies about trans women being assaulted and movies about trans women disclosing trans status *are* old and boring news. I would watch a movie where a trans woman

-played a sport

-went on an exciting road trip

-dated someone well after transitioning

-went into space

-had a flamethrower

-ran a fun run against patriarchy

-was funny and didn't take shit from anyone ever

was in love with a jerk who was a jerk in a way that had nothing to do with her being trans

-traveled through time

-killed a cop by mistake and then went on the lam

-struggled with veganism

-had one of her legs eaten by a wolf

-ate a wolf's leg

-struggled with misogyny amongst freemasons

-taught Tom Cruise to feel

-faced her personal psychological demons in a haunted house

-had diamond-tipped fingers that could cut people into pieces like that guy in the Fist of the North Star, except I only saw that once when I was fifteen and I was stoned and might have been interpreting what was going on inaccurately

-was a competitive eater who met God and God was Beth Ditto

-brought down capitalism via telekinetically making strategic heads explode

-ran for president and won, against all odds

-went to 100 AA meetings in 100 days

-taught a college poetry class

-taught a high school poetry class

-had a leopard

-discovered a magical alternate town on the other side of the walls of the town where she'd lived all her life but it wasn't a boring metaphor for gender

-had to stay out of the sun because the sun made her skin sparkle

-was a lifelong vegan who, for medical reasons, had to start eating meat

-had been androphilic her whole life, before and after transitioning, but found herself accidentally and- more importantly- giddily in a relationship with a woman

-worked in a store and had obnoxious friends who came by and they were all funny and that was the whole movie

-had a midlife sexual awakening in Italy

-ate, prayed, loved

-was institutionalized for something un-trans-related and being trans didn't really come up

-struggled with polyamory in the sixties

-explained, via allegory, to a classroom full of anthropomorphic pigs, that Jesus was a lot more interested in loving and understanding people who were different than himself than he was in judging anyone or legislating against them

-was the second coming of Christ

-was the third coming of Christ

-was surprised to find herself pregnant

-uncovered a conspiracy to keep a race of aliens ALREADY AMONG US a secret and the aliens were like this black oil in people's eyes

-ran away and joined the carnival when she was young because she would look at people's faces and see the secret pig monsters inside their faces that nobody else could see except that when she got to the carnival other carnies could see it too and it was a bond that kept them together but not the only bond

-decided to become a vigilante

-something about being inside people's dreams and controlling them

-lost her ability to make new memories but still tried to solve a mystery

-played in a Nirvana cover band

-kept serial killers in a well in her house and skinned them

-was played by a trans woman

-could shoot lasers from her eyes the whole time but you didn't find out til the end and then you found out that the whole time the movie had been about her astounding restraint

-had a boyfriend who was nice and cool and knew she was trans but didn't have weird shit around it and also he was secretly an enormously powerful wiccan priest but not in an evil way and then she found out accidentally so he initiated her into the wiccan mysteries and she turned out to be this enormously powerful witch and saved everybody except her sister which was sad

-was an x-man and nobody made a joke about her being an "ex-man" or if they did she fucking killed them and didn't get in trouble 'cause everybody understood how annoying that was

-was obsessed with Axl Rose

-was really into pogs

-sucked at crossword puzzles but still did them

-had a cool old van with an airbrushed wizard on the side

-came from a ton of money and didn't feel uncomfortable about it but instead owned it and disseminated it to really good causes including but not limited to trans things

-kept bees

-was a recovering primitivist

-realized that she had outgrown the punkhouse lifestyle she'd been living for the last thirty-five years

-mentored a bunch of troubled young trans women who all achieved success and none of them died

-had extremely vivid daydreams that were portrayed in animation

-hated the writing of Dan Brown so much and talked about it so much that it was clear to everyone except her that there was something going on with her and Dan Brown beyond simple hatred

-was a shitty drummer but was good at programming drums and kind of laughed about it

-was eighty and looked back at her life and it kept looking like some boring predictable trans movie cliche was about to happen but they kept not happening

-was a tennis coach

-was a furry

-was Muslim and it was a comedy about her trying to impress her new partner's conservative Jewish parents in Williamsburg

-was a really good mom

-had a puppy farm

-was a crustpunk queercore farmer

-was a different kind of farmer

-was a 16th century blacksmith

-Theorized that one could time travel within her own lifetime, stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. She woke to find herself trapped in the past, facing mirror images that were not her own and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better. Her only guide on this journey was the ghost of Kathy Acker, a writer from her own time, who only she could see and hear. And so she finds herself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that her next leap… will be the leap… HOME

I have already seen the boring things in the three movies in the comic lots of times and I think the fact that they're presented like a legitimate representation of the range of trans experiences speaks more to how badly our imaginations as a people are constrained by boring old conceptions of transness than it speaks to our community being a bunch of jerks although let's be real we are a bunch of jerks
